Abstract Teaching grammar has been a complex aspect of learning. Grammar is a crucial component of the students’ lives and their academics as well. Through grammar, they can communicate and articulate their ideas clearly. Grammar is compulsory in the school curriculum however, this does not guarantee of good utterance unless the student has good grammatical competence. The problem is often how to effectively teach grammar, and not whether it is made compulsory or learnt with an intention of promoting coherence in the learners. Researchers have marginalized the teaching of grammar, and there exist no conclusive research providing solutions to teaching techniques that teachers should use. This has led to the formulation of many instructional techniques, with the most prominent ones being inductive and deductive instructional techniques. Deductive teaching involves giving instructions to students; it begins from general rule to more specific concept, while inductive is defined as instruction that involves moving from specific to general. This research aims to test the effectiveness of the deductive and inductive approach to teach grammar. The two approaches are going to be applied to high school students in order to find the best approach for teaching grammar . The sample population will include five EFL teachers and thirty six students and the test instruments will be questionnaires, and post tests for each approach in order to collect data. 1.Introduction Grammar is a study that involves the use of words, and how they work together. It shows the relationships existing between elements of a sentence, and the importance of the sentence. It refers to knowledge of language in the mind of the speaker, and the system of rules written in books of grammar and other descriptions. It is an invisible force that guides the articulation and construction of sentences. Thus, for inherence and good diction a major component of the English we study grammar. This definition of what forms the central part of grammar only confirms that it is a necessary part of any form of communication, as an incorrectly formulated sentence could lead to misinterpretation. Grammar is thus, an integral part of the English language and general communication. A common assumption for many people is that, good command of vocabulary often equates to good grammar, but from the description above it is obvious that is a misconception. Thus, grammar teachers are tasked with the duty of ensuring that they employ the best teaching strategies during their instruction process. This is where inductive and deductive teaching strategies come in. Deductive approach is majorly teacher centered with minimal active participation of the student. In this case the rules of grammar are given and explained to the students and afterwards they practice the learnt rules for mastery. Inductive teaching on the other hand is student centered, and focuses on active participation of the students. They are given examples and they have to figure out the rules that apply to each example. This research will focus on determining the effectiveness of both inductive and deductive approach in order to find the most useful, and suitable method for high school students.
