Globalization has led to the rise of multinational corporations operating in free trade zones in Third World countries
Globalization has led to the rise of multinational corporations operating in free trade zones in Third World countries. These corporations hire poor women from these countries to work in their factories. Using the four readings by Fuentes and Ehrenreich, describe how (a) ideologies of gender and (b) racialized gender norms shape the reasons for why they hire these women. (c) Briefly, why doesn’t the fact that women earn money give them societal power?
2. These last few months have seen horrifying grand jury decisions in the cases of Mike Brown and Eric Garner. Review all of the materials for this course (transcripts of the films are on Ilearn) and discuss THREE ideas/concepts that help you understand these cases. You can focus on one case or both. You can focus on any aspect of these murders (why they happened, government response, peoples’ response, etc.). 2 Use the 3 concepts you choose to ANALYZE these cases. If you draw on websites you find on the Internet, you must include snapshots of these as an “appendix” to your essay. Here are some examples (but feel free to use others!) • McIntosh—use the concept of white privilege to talk about how some people have reacted to the decisions (you can search on the web for these reactions; give me the url cite in your paper—you can include a screen shot as well as an appendix). • Tim Wise—how folks rationalize racism or use the concept of reverse racism in their reactions • Film: The Story We Tell: how we see long-standing myths about blacks repeated in the media today • Film: The House We Live In: how racism and class inequality has been institutionalized • Race, class, and gender: how these intersect in dominant ideas of black men and that are used by police • Film: Beyond Beats and Rhymes: the construction of masculinity; caricatures of black men in the media; the concept of “black death” (Chuck D).
