Participate in a class discussion
In your follow-on responses, provide constructive critiques of your colleagues’ choice of methodology and suggest additional approaches they might consider
How to Respond to Discussion Questions
The participation component will assess the students’ contribution to the class discussions in the seminar. In particular it will assess the extent to which students:
• contribute original views
• build creatively on the views of others
• show intelligent critique of theory or practice
• add an international or cultural aspect to the class
• show originality in the application of theory
• clarify the theory being studied
• encourage the effective contribution of other members of the class.
Discuss on the write up below. providing constructive critiques of your colleagues’ choice of methodology and suggest additional approaches they might consider
For the purpose of this week’s discussion, three (3) journal articles were identified to have similar research problems:
i. Risk Management in Oil and Gas Construction Projects in Vietnam
ii. Why Risk Efficiency is a Key aspect of Best Practice Projects
iii. Techniques for the analysis of Risks in Major Projects
Although having slightly different topics, they all focus on the importance of efficient risk management in running projects. As well as point towards the fact that risk management is an important aspect of best practices when it comes to running a project.
The topic which is being proposed for this research is “Effectiveness of Risk Analysis in Oil and Gas Projects: A Focus on Activities in the Western African Region”. In relation to this topic, the journal articles which are listed above have critically analyzed how risk is being managed in major projects, oil and gas construction projects and in a particular location – Vietnam. Another of the articles emphasis that projects can only be successful when best practices are observed and efficiency in analyzing risk is a key aspect of the said best practice.
In order to properly research this topic, the methodology which is to be used will be an analysis approach. The current process and approach which is being used to analyze risks which are related to projects in the Western African region (particular attention to Nigeria) will be evaluated for its results or achievements. The motive is to look at the ways in which risk is analyzed and proffer a more result driven and achievable method of analyzing these risk. Hence, this method will be compared alongside a region that have set industry standard via a case study approach. There will be data gathering and the major source for this will be online sources, questionnaires will also be sampled.
The proposed research although focusing on West Africa, will concentrate more on Nigeria been the largest oil producer in the Western African Region. A lot of effort have seemingly been put into identifying and dealing with risk in these areas but this research seeks to investigate how well the effort have performed in ensuring that projects are completed according to project management standards (PMBok 2014). The identified case studies will be reviewed and compared with the standards that the project governing book has recommended. In all cases, shortcomings to meeting up this requirement will be identified and in situations where the identified case studies proffered solutions, they will be further researched to see their acceptability and/or do-ability to be proffered as solutions for the research topic.
The methodology approach used in the journal articles are interviewing and sampling of questionnaires. This approach was useable at the time of their research and can be adopted when undertaking my own research work.
