MANAGING TOURISM ORGANISATIONS
REPORT
2000 WORDS
The central aim of the report is to encourage you to analyse a local, regional or national tourism organisation or association’s current situation and to make recommendations as to how it should address specific managerial challenges in the future. These challenges might typically relate to service management in general, human resources, marketing or information management in accordance with the key ‘themes’ or issues around which this course is focused. Before you chose you must ensure that you are able to secure sufficient information, via secondary and primary research techniques about its product(s), markets, operation and management. Local tourism organisations and associations are often easier to research but other possible organisation types are suggested below, but in consultation with one of the course tutors, you might decide to choose an organisation which does not ‘fit’ one of these:
 Tour operator/travel agency
 Airline/coach operator
 Accommodation provider
 National/regional/local tourism organisation
 Local authority
 Attraction (individual or group)

WRITING YOUR REPORT

After choosing your tourism organisation/association you should now focus on one theme of tourism management that has been studied as part of the Managing Tourism Organisation module.

Critically analyse your chosen theme in the context of your chosen organisation.

A PEST analysis will help you to establish any challenges/problems that your tourism organisation/association may have. In order to help you write the report you are required to address the following:

 Context: Provide a brief but sufficient context to introduce your organisation and its product/s and the identified set of challenges/problems. Your PEST analysis will be presented here.
 Identify: Through your research of your organisation/association critically analyse your chosen theme.
 Strategy: For your identified managerial challenge/problem you should recommend and justify appropriate strategies for tackling the challenges/problems. Whilst your strategy/strategies can be presented in bullet point format it is recommended that your justifications are presented in paragraph format to help you to support your justifications with the appropriate balance of theoretical and practical grounding required. It is important that you show a sound understanding of the ways in which the key managerial themes of general service, human resource management, marketing and information management can be used by your organisation to tackle the set of challenges/problems upon which your report is based.
 Timescale: An appropriate timescale will be presented for each strategy you introduce. This can be presented in the form of a timeline.
